昨日の記事「#970. Money makes the mare to go.」 ([2011-12-23-1]) で，使役動詞 make に後続する to 不定詞について調べたが，今日は現代英語で使役的な意味を帯び始めているといわれる help に不定詞が後続する構文を取り上げたい．
　「help + （目的語 +） 不定詞」の構文については，現代英語において不定詞の形態が to 不定詞から原形不定詞へ移行しつつあるとして，多くの関連研究がある．20世紀半ば以降，原形不定詞が増加していると言われるが，実のところ help と構造をなす原形不定詞の起源はかなり古くまで遡る．
　まず，OED を見てみよう．"help", v. B.5. で，help が不定詞を後続させる構文について述べられている．目的語（不定詞の意味上の主語）を伴わない場合が 5.a.，伴う場合が 5.b. で扱われており，いずれも to 不定詞の使用が普通だが，原形不定詞の使用を示す最も早い例が16世紀に現われる．次のような注記があった．

In this and b the infinitive has normally to, which however from 16th c. is often omitted: this is now a common colloq. form.

　OED では中英語に原形不定詞の使用はなかったと明記しているわけではないが，それを示唆しているように読めそうだ．
　ところが，Mustanoja (532) によれば，中英語からの例は確かにある．

. . . the subject of the infinitive, originally a dative, is no doubt looked upon as an accusative in ME. The infinitive usually takes to, but not invariably: --- mine friende þe ic halp to sweriȝen (Vices & V 9); --- alle þat halpe hym to erie, to selle or to sowe (PPl. B vii 6); --- to helpe him to werreye (Ch. CT A Kn. 1484); --- Rymenhild help me winne (Horn 991); --- somme hulpen erie his half acre (PPl. B vi 118); --- I wol thee helpe hem carie (Ch. CT C Pard. 954). Chaucer has four cases of help with the plain infinitive and seventeen with the infinitive with to or for to. The two instances found in the Book of London English (non-literary prose of Chaucer's time) are followed by an infinitive with to (for to): --- Þe wheche dede paien diverse sommes of monye for to helpe to destruye Þe weres yn Tempse (151); --- [dyverse percelles paied] to ij wemen for her travayle yn helpynge to make clene Þe halle (174).

　ここで，MED に当たってみると，"helpen (v.)" 1. (b) の用例にも少数だが原形不定詞の例があった．
　今回は，この構文が中英語にまで遡ることまではわかった．近代以降の同構文の発達については，コーパスを用いた Mair の研究（特に pp. 121--26）が詳しい．
