標記の文のような，譲歩を表わす特殊な表現が現代英語にある．前半部分が "however humble" あるいは "no matter how humble" ほどの意味に相当する，仮定法現在を用いた倒置表現だ．倒置を含まずに，if や though を用いたり，仮定法過去を用いたりすることもある．OED の定義としては，"never" の語義4として以下のようにある．

never so, in conditional clauses, denoting an unlimited degree or amount.

　以下に，辞書やコーパスから例文を挙げてみよう．

　・ She would not marry him, though he were never so rich.
　・ Some vigorous effort, though it carried never so much danger, ought to be made.
　・ Were the critic never so much in the wrong, the author will have contrived to put him in the right.
　・ 'I am at home, and that is everything.' Be it never so gloomy --- is there still a sofa covered with black velvet?

　辞書では《古》とレーベルが貼られているし，BNCWeb で "be it never so" を検索するとヒットは7例のみである．いずれにせよ，頻度の高い表現ではない．
　倒置や仮定法を用いるということであれば，古い英語ではより多く用いられたに違いない．実際に中英語ではよく使われた表現で，MED, "never" 2 (b) には幾多の例が挙げられている．定義は以下の通り．

(b) ~ so, with adj. or adv.: to whatever degree; extremely; ~ so muchel (mirie, hard, wel, etc.), no matter how much, however much, etc.; also with noun: if he be ~ so mi fo, however great an enemy he may be to me;

　OED によると，この表現の初例は12世紀 Peterborough Chronicle の1086年の記事ということなので，相当に古い表現ではある．

Nan man ne dorste slean oðerne man, næfde he nævre swa mycel yfel ȝedon.

　中英語最初期から現代英語まで長く使われてきた統語的イディオムだが，なぜ上記の意味が生じてくるのか理屈がよく分からない．否定の never と譲歩が合わされば，「たとえ?でないとしても」と実際とは裏返しの意味になりそうなところである．
