私は英語でも日本語でも Netspeak を常用してはいないが，インターネットという技術革新に伴う言語の新変種の誕生と発展には関心がある．[2011-07-01-1]の記事「インターネット時代は言語変化の回転率の最も速い時代」で論じたように，人類の言語変化の歴史は，今まさに新たな段階に入ったところである．Netspeak は現時点でその最先端を走っている変種であり，英語においても日々独自の表現が増殖している．
　チャット，電子メール，そしてとりわけケータイメール (texting) の書き言葉に見られる特徴として，各種の省略記法がある．多くは，句を構成する各単語の頭文字をつなぎ合わせる頭文字語 (initialism) であったり，"2" や "4" をそれぞれ "to" や "for" に対応させるような判じ絵 (rebus) であったりする．ここには遊び心も入っているだろうが，何よりもケータイのキーパッド上で打数を減らせるという実用的な効果がある．Crystal (142--43) より，主要なものを記事の末尾に挙げた．
　initialism 自体は英語では新しいことではないし，rebus もクイズでお馴染みだ．このような省略を広範に用いる英語の書き言葉変種が現われたということも，特に新しいことではない．例えば中世の写本も各種の省略符合に満ちている．省略の動機づけも，Netspeak と中世の写本の書き言葉のあいだに共通点がある．いずれも入力にかかる労力を減らしたいという欲求は同じであり，コスト削減（ネット上ではパケット料金，写本では高価な紙代）という動機づけも共通する．つまり，具体的な現われこそ省略符号か initialism かで互いに異なるが，動機づけは類似しており，書き言葉の歴史のなかで繰り返し例証されているものである．
　そもそも書き言葉は，表意文字を rebus 的に応用したり，ギリシア文字より前の alphabet では対応する話し言葉に当然含まれていた母音を標示しなかったりと，読み手にある程度の解読作業を要求するものとして出発し，発展してきた（[2010-06-23-1]の記事「文字の種類」を参照）．Netspeak の書き言葉の変種は，一見革新的に見えるが，文字の当初からの性質を多分に受け継いでいるという点で，意外と保守的と言えるのではないか．
