Bridging Course: Critical Thinking and Academic Writing
Students are expected to have advanced oral skills in English (general
speaking and listening) to register for this class. The goal of this course
is to develop skills to identify the outline of an argument, to ask the
'critical questions' needed to evaluate an argument, as well as understanding
the styles and organization of academic writing. There will be short written
assignments throughout the semester (40%). In the later half of the semester,
a term paper will be assigned (30%). During the semester, skills to give
a formal oral presentation will be introduced, followed by student presentations
(20%). Students are expected to ask questions and contribute their thoughts
in classroom discussions (10%). A strict attendance policy will be enforced;
virtually no consideration is given to absences caused by extracurricular
activities. Students should read and use the information on the course
HP (http://web.hc.keio.ac.jp/~matsuoka/) before each class.
