Internet and e-mail. It is not easy to use your favourite e-mail client at your home or office. Therefore, we suggest you to use some webmail services. There are many so-called internet cafes in Vietnam where one can connect with internet to read and to send e-mails.

Phone. To avoid unpleasant surprises, please ask the price before making a call. It is recommended to make calls at public telephone, not only because of a lower price, but also in some hotels the call time is measured automatically right after you get connected to the wanted telephone set although the talk has not been begun or connection has not been set up at all.

Travel:

If you want to travel around Vietnam, some travel agencies are good and reasonable choices, because they

  • often organize cheap tours and provide a wide variety of services, and
  • have much experience to serve foreign guests.

    If train is chosen for travelling, you are suggested not to carry large and hard luggages because of the absence of suitable places for them on Vietnamese trains. Moreover, you should keep the train ticket until the check out at the station gates.

    Transportation:

    There are about 55 bus lines in Hanoi. Figuring out exactly where the buses go can be a challenge, and service on some of the lines is infrequent. One can buy a ticket on buses with a cost of 3,000 VND for normal travel distance and 5,000 VND for a long travel distance. Taxi is a more comfortable way getting around Hanoi. Since different companies have different prices, ask drivers in advance if possible. Please take only meter taxi with the company name, phone number and taxi number painted on the car, write these data down if there is any problem.

    Vietnamese Currency:

    The currency issued by the Vietnam State Bank is the dong (abbreviated "d" or VND) which is used uniformly throughout the country. Widely-used bank notes in domination of 500 VND, 1000 VND, 2000 VND, 5000 VND, 10000 VND, 20000 VND, 50000 VND, 100000 VND, 200000 VND and 500000 VND are presently in circulation. There are also coins with values of 200 VND, 500 VND, 1000 VND, 2000 VND. The front views of them are below: Traveller's cheques can be exchanged for VND only at authorised exchange banks. Credit cards (American Express, Visa, Mastercard) can be used in banks, travel agencies, hotels, major restaurants and ATM of large banks. US currency is exchanged for Vietnamese dong and treasury notes in banks, exchange bureaus, hotels, and jewellery shops with the daily changed rate.
