If you are interested in studying abroad even a little bit, come to this fair. I will be there at its help desk. You can find more information about this fair in the homepage for the Keio University International Center (http://www.ic.keio.ac.jp/).

For Class on Friday, June 13, 2008:

1. Think of two topics for your final presentation (Speech #4) by using the worksheet on pp. 47-48 very carefully. Finish Items 1-4 for the two topics.
IMPORTANT notes on Items 1-4:
Items 1and 2: In the final speech, you compare two (or three) things and give your opinion about which is better. In this persuasion speech, you give three pieces of evidence to persuade your classmates to belive that your opinion is the best. If most of your classmates agree with your opinion even BEFORE your speech, the speech will be boring and, in fact, it is NOT a persuasion speech, because you do not have to persuade them to agree with you. Find two topics. For each topic, think of an opnion which most of your classmates either do not agree or are indifferent with.
Item 4: Think of evicence for all the cells in the following table:
. X Y
Point 1
Point 2
Point 3
In the final speech, you will compare two (or three) things; X and Y. And compare X and Y in three points and persuade your classmates to believe that your opinion (about which is better than the other) is the best. You need evidence (number/data/example) for all the cells with in the table. For example, in the past, a student compared three portable phone comanies in Japan;
. Softbank au DoCoMo
Service Area Coverage
Strong Points in Services
Price Plans for Students
Another student compared CDs with MDs:
. CDs MDs
Data Storage Size
Portabiity
Price
Find three points for comparing the two (or three) things and write them in Item 4.
This is NOT an easy homework, and it will take a lot of time! But the success with the big final speech depends A LOT on its topic selection. Take your time NOW and find two good topics, so that you can easily prepare for a good final speech LATER.
2. Finish the self-evaluation sheet of your Speech #2 (This was a homework for Monday, June 9, 2008).
Give your Speech #3 in this class. Remember two things:
(1) Prepare well by using the worksheet for Speech #3 (pp. 43-44). Everything in this handout is important.
(2) Rehearse with a watch and your own loud voice many times, so that you can finish within the time limit of 90 seconds.

For Class on Monday, June 16:

1. Self-evaluation of Speech #3 (Self-evaluation Sheet to be collected in this class)
(1) Go to the Foreign Language Education Research Center office on the second floor of Building #3 with the self-evaluation sheet for Speech #3 and your student ID card. Note that the DVD for Speech #3 will be available from Thursday, June 12, 2008.
(2) Check out the Speech #3 DVD with your student ID card. Don't forget to check out a remote control and a headphone too.

2. Ando, Izuha, Kimura, Nagasaki, Nara, Mizuno: Submit Homework on p. 46 (Deadline: June 16, 2008)

For Classes on Friday, June 27 and Monday, June 30, 2008:

1 Very Important Final Presentations (20%)
(1) From Aoki and T. Tanaka on Firday, June 27.
(2) From Taneda to Morita on Monday, June 30.
The final presentation is like a final examination for the presentation skill section of Study Skills. If you should get sick on your presentation date, see a doctor on the day or on the following day and get a document from the doctor. We will postpone (put off) final presentations only for medical reasons.

For Class on Friday, July 4, 2008:

1. Finish Handout (pp. 21-22). Use your watch and try to answer all sections in 70 minutes, just like the final examination on July 7. Note that you should cover all points in all checklists for writing (Tbk, p. 29) when you write one paragraph in Section II. Since we will NOT use computers for the final exam, Item F6 in Format Checklist does NOT apply to the paragraph. Your paragraph will be evaluated by your classmate. So write it on a piece of paper (A4 or B4).
2. You can use any dictionaries in the final examination. Don't forget to bring them to the class.

For Final Class on Monday, July 7, 2008 (Last Class!):

1. Final Examination on Reading and Writing Skills (30%)
You can use your dictionaries. Bring them to this class.
You must take this very important final examinaion on this day. However, if you get sick, see your doctor either on this day or on the next day. Contact Mr. Shimura as soon as possible and show some document from your hospital about the illness. Only for a medical/health reason, you may take the test on a later date.
