STARS OF THE WEEK!

Speech #1: Self-introduction on April 18, 2005

Check their body language (or physical message)!

PRESENTATION RANKINGS

These rankings are based on students' peer evaluation sheets, and they are not necessarily
evaluated the same way by the instructor of this class. Yet, presentations are not only for the
teacher but also for your audience. And these rankings show how well these people
communicated with their audience in their speeches. Congratulations!!! I hope many of you
will appear in these rankings.

SPEECH #2 "SHOW AND TELL" (May 27, 2005)

1. Kitamaki (Average Score = 21.79 out of 25.0)
2. Mitsuyasu (21.29)
3. Okubo (20.88)
4. Sasaki (20.50)
5. Kobayashi (19.92)

When you look at your speech in the video, look at these people's
presentations too! You can learn a lot from good presentations.

SPEECH #3 REHEARSAL "BOOK/MOVIE REVIEW" (June 6, 2005)

1. Kitamaki (Score = 28.78 out of 35.00)
2. Kobayashi (27.91)
3. Mitsuyasu (27.74)
4. Ookubo (27.04)
5. Oku (25.52)

The class average was 24.53. As the maximum score is 35.00, this is a very low class average.
You really need to look carefully at the teacher's evaluation sheet and work on your weak points.
I hope we will have much better speeches on Friday. Good luck!!!
Also, do not take any rehearsals too lightly. You can give a "very good" speech, if and only if
you do your best and give a "good" rehearsal. Work harder on the next rehearsal for the
very important final speech of this class.

SPEECH #3 "BOOK/MOVIE REVIEW" (June 10, 2005)

1. Kitamaki (Score = 30.71 out of 35.50)
2. Sasaki (30.48)
3. Ookubo (28.83)
4. Oku (28.75)
5. Kobayashi (28.29)

The class average for Speech #3 (i.e., 26.03) was better than that for its rehearsal (24.53). Yet,
this is still not a very high score. As I said in class and also as I wrote above, you can give a
"very good" presentation if you give lots of "good" rehearsals. I want ALL STUDENTS to
give very good presentations. You will have the last rehearsal (for Speech #4)
next week. Do your best from the rehearsal not only in class but also AT HOME!!! Good luck.

BTW, Mr. Sasaki came back to the ranking, and his score is very close to Mr. Kitamaki's. Very good.

Of course, Mr. Kitamaki's English is very good. But all of you must understand that he also
prepares and rehearse a lot!!! It is difficult to beat (?!) him, but it is NOT IMPOSSIBLE,
because you are evaluted on your presentation skills, not on your English. Work harder on
presentation skills. Every one in class can be masters of short presentations!!!

And, Mr. Kitamaki, congratulations! As you may have also found out in Speech #3, your
classmates are getting better and better. Keep working hard and show us good examples,
so that the whole class will improve!

SPEECH #4 REHEARSALS "PERSUASIVE SPEECH" (June 20 and 24, 2005)

1. Oku (Score = 39.65 out of 50.00)
2. Ohkubo (39.29)
3. Suzuki (38.56)
4. Kinugasa (38.29)
5. Mitsuyasu (38.00)

The class average for this rehearsal was 35.35. With the maximum score of 50.00, this is a low average.
As I said on Friday, both preparation (the use of all relevant handouts) and many rehearsals with a watch
(until you can give your speech only with your posters) are important for you to give a good final speech
next week. Good luck!!!

BTW, we had two new faces in the ranking, Ms. Suzuki and Mr. Kinugasa. Also, Mr. Mitsuyasu
came back, while Ms. Oku and Mr. Ohkubo have kept themselves in the ranking. Congratualtions!!!

Finally, I want you to remember that you have been studying the presentation skill not only for
the final grade but also for your future. As I said in the first class, according to our research,
not only the current students and professors at Faculty of Economics but also its graduates
and companies they work for think that the presentation skill is one the most important
English skills for your future. And, as with any skills, you cannot master the skill without
actually using it. This is why we had not only regular speeches but also rehearsals. You can
also learn a lot from other people's speeches. It was too bad that many of you were absent
from the last two classes. Yet, you still have one more chance to work on the important
skill for your future. I may be repeating myself, but DO YOUR BEST from preparation and
rehearsals at home.

SPEECH #4 "PERSUASIVE SPEECH" (June 27 and July 1, 2005)

1. Kitamaki (Score = 43.83 out of 50.00)
2. Oku (42.43)
3. Mitsuyasu (41.95)
4. Ohkubo (41.26)
5. Saito and Seo (41.00)

Just comparing the scores of top five speakers in this final speech with those in its rehearsal
tells us that Speech #4 was much better than its rehearsal. In fact, the class average
also increased from 35.35 to 38.82 too. Very good! Now, it is time to concentrate on
the final exam on academic reading and paragraph writing. Good luck!!!
