Homework:
- 1. Buy a copy of the Japan Times (JT) at a news stand of a train station
near your house on the monring of Tuesday, September 27, 2005. The JT is
a morning paper, so you should buy it in the morning. If you should forget
to do so, you can buy a copy by going to the JT office in Shiba, Minato
Ward. Look at this homepage (map) for info about this office. You should call their circulation department
BEFORE you go there!
- 2. Finish all items on pp. 3-4 of our class handout.
- 3. Read pp. 5-6 of our class handout and prepare for a lecture about characteristics
of news paper English.
- 4. Look at the Schedule section of our homepage and check your presentation #1 date. If you find any error there, report it to Mr. Shimura.
- Homework for those who give their first presenations early:
- 1. Go to the Hiyoshi Library and look at the latest (= within a few weeks)
Japan Times.
- 2. Select one or two news stories you want to give a presentation about.
- 3. Make a copy of the news stories and show them to Mr. Shimura on Friday.
For Monday, October 3, 2005:
- Homework:
- 1. Analyze the lead in the example news story on p. 5.
- 2. Use the Japan Times for Tuesday, September 27, 2005 and finish Handout,
pp. 7-8. This is homework #2!
- 3. Read Handout, p. 9-10 and review how to prepare for your first presentation
(i.e., MOP). If your presentation is coming soon, start STEP 1 NOW.
- Homework for Shibazaki and Ikeda:
- 1. Do STEP 1.1 (Handout, p. 9). Read the checklist very carefully and finish
ALL items.
- 2. Do STEP 1.2 (Handout, p. 10) and bring 31 copies of your first handout
to this class.

- 1. Do STEP 1.1 (Handout, p. 9). Read the checklist very carefully and finish
ALL items there.

- Homework:
- 1. Read the Presentation Skill Checklist (pp. 13-4) and related handouts
(pp. 22-35) and review SS presentation skills. We will have the final lecture
about presentation skills in this class.
- Homework for Moori and Fujisaki::
- Bring 31 copies of your first handout to this class.

Comments about Term Paper #1 on MOP
- 1. Front Cover
- No page number on the front cover.
- 2. Section I "Introduction"
- 3. Section II "Summary of Background Information
- This section is a "summary" of what you have already talked about.
Report the content of your backgound information section mostly in the
past tense.
- This section is usually written in three or more paragraphs.
- (1) Introduction Paragraph
- Give an overview of your main points in the body paragraph(s)
- = "WHAT" of the background information
- Also, explain WHY you talked about the points in the Background Information
section.
- (2) Body Paragraph(s)
- Summarize your main points with their evidence in the Background Information
section.
- (3) Conclusion Paragraph
- Give a summary of your main points in the body paragraph(s)
- Write final words.
- 4. Section III "Questions and Answers"
- 5. Section IV "Five Comprehension Questions and Their Answers"
- 6. Section V "Opinion"
- This section is NOT a summary. Report your opinion about your news article.
You have two choices:
- (1) Write only one paragraph:
- Topic Sentence = Your Opinion
- Supporting Sentences with evidence in Developing Sentences
- Conclusion Sentence
- (2) Write three or more paragraphs:
- Introduction Paragraph
- Your Opinion
- Overview of your reasons
- Body Paragraph(s)
- Evidence for all your reasons
- Conclusion Paragraph
- Summary of your opinion and reasons.
- Final words.
- 7. Section VI "Analyses of Classmates' Evaluation Sheets"
- Report averages and standard deviations for all your number data (in tables
and figures).
- Report frequencies of all your text/comment data (in a list format).
- Don't forget to report all comments, including comments with the frequency
of only one.
- 8. Section VI "Final Subjective and Objective Evaluation"
- This section is written with at least four paragraphs:
- (1) Introduction Paragraph
- (2) Subjective Evaluation
- = The self-evaluation section in MOP
- (3) Objective Evaluation
- = Step 3 (one class after your MOP)
- Quote data (both number and text data) from Section VI and discuss both
good and bad points of your MOP objectively.
- (4) Conclusion Paragraph
- Summary of (2) and (3)
