MOP Center
I. Goal of MOPs
- To review and master the presentation skills from the Study Skills course.
II. How can you give a good MOP?
- 1. Use the following two checklists:
- (1) Pages 11-14 of our handouts.
- (2) Pages 20-21 of our handouts.
- Check all check boxes, one by one!
- 2. Rehearse with a watch as many times as possible.
- 3. Remember that physical and visual messages are more important than story message.
- 4. Use your time well. Keep all deadlines. You really need two weeks to prepare for an acceptable presentation.
III. Tips for Success
- Many of you forget to check all the check boxes in the checklists. Be especially careful with the following items:
- Check box for (3) on p. 11.
- Writing emails in English is one of the most important skills in English. Look at our homepage and learn the skill. Then, you can send your first email to your instructor.
- Check box for (6) on p. 11.
- Pay attention to not only the story message but also the physical and visual messages and rehearse with a watch as many times as possible.
- Check box for (c) in Section 2 on p. 12.
- Supplement A is not a very good example. Be careful with the format of the source. Do not use the format in Supplement A. Use the format in the Schedule Section of our web site.
- Check box for (d) in Section 2 on p. 12.
- You need to give a more user-friendly word/phrase list.
- Check box for (e) in Section 2 on p. 12.
- Use more paraphrases in your questions. You have already studied a variety of paraphrasing techniques in Study Skills.
- Check boxes for Sections 2 and 5.
- The "background information" and the "opinion" sections are mini presentations.
- Mr. Shimura has many good examples of term papers from the past classes. You can borrow one of them when you write your term paper.
