The humour here is purely in the puns. For example, in the first riddle, "salad dressing" is both a noun (meaning something that you add to salads, such as mayonnaise), and a noun (salad) plus a gerund (dressing), implying that the tomato blushed because it saw the salad with no clothes on. (Note that the "because" part is not a complete sentence. In written English "This was because..." would be needed.)

1. Why did the tomato blush?

Because it saw the salad dressing!

2. Why did the jam roll?

Because it saw the apple turnover!

3. Why did the butter fly?

Because it was late for the moth ball!

4. Why did the scarecrow get a Nobel prize?

Because he was out standing in his field!!

5. Why did the ice cream?

Because the wafer had been a wafer so long!!

6. Why did the film star always feel cold?

Because wherever she went, she was always surrounded by fans!!

7. Why did the baby lobster refuse to share with the other baby sea animals?

Because he was a little shellfish!!

8. Why did thecockroach think that the cook was a bully?

Because every day he saw the cook beating eggs, whipping cream, and battering fish!!

9. Why did thefly fly?

Because the spider spider (= spied 'er)!!

10. Why did theowl 'owl (= howl)?

Because the woodpecker woodpecker (= woodpecker)!!

11. Why didn't the viper vip 'er nose?

Because the adder 'ad 'er handkerchief!!
