Some Possible Answers to Study Skills for College English, Exercise W-3 (pp.28-29)
London must be one of the greatest cities in the world.
Anyone who enjoys travel should, THEREFORE, (SURELY/ CERTAINLY) visit it at least once. FIRST / FIRST OF ALL, London is an old city, and many interesting buildings
remain standing to this very day. They are also well preserved and attractive
to visitors. FOR EXAMPLE / FOR INSTANCE,
Westminster Abbey was built several hundred years ago, and contains the graves
of many famous Britons. The Tower of London, St. Paulfs Cathedral, the Palaceof Westminster, where Parliament meets, and Buckingham Palace are ALSO famous London landmarks. SECOND / NEXT / IN ADDITION, London's beauty always makes an impression
on first-time visitors. The River Thames runs through it, and there
are many parks. IN PARTICULAR / INDEED, Hyde Park and Regentfs Park are so huge that people
walking in them tend to forget that they are in the middle of a large city. THIRD, Londonfs museums and art galleries include some of the best in
the world. It is quite easy to spend a full day at the BritishMuseum. IN ADDITION / MOREOVER, there are important
art collections at places such as the National Gallery and the Tate. FOURTH,
the city offers numerous entertainment possibilities, FOR INSTANCE, (INCLUDING
/ SUCH AS) theaters, concerts and movies.
IN FACT / INDEED, its theater companies surpass those of any other city
in the English-speaking world. Some people complain that London is very expensive. HOWEVER / NEVERTHELESS / EVEN SO / DESPITE THIS, there are many reasonably
priced B&Bs, small hotels offering a bed (in other words, a bedroom)
and breakfast but few other facilities, SO one need not spend a fortune
on accommodation. SIMILARLY / FURTHERMORE,
food and other expenses do not have to be high, if the visitor is willing to
eat and travel in the same way as the average Londoner. CONSEQUENTLY, it does not have to be a very
expensive city to visit. IN SHORT / AS A
RESULT, London is a very
rewarding place to visit, not just once, but many times.
