Information about the Jokyu vocabulary test, 26 November

The test will be based on the vocabulary in the following chapters: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
You will only be expected to display knowledge of the words that belong to the list of 2570 that are necessary for general academic use, vocabulary related to economics, and words related to the media that we have paid special attention to. (See the links to the appropriate pages of the 'Compleat Lexical Tutor' website given on my learning vocabulary page.) For example, you will not be expected to know 'cliff-hanger' (p. 25), but you will be expected to know 'stereotype' (p. 44). I will also expect you to learn the following words: economy, economics, economic, and economical.

You should be able to:
1. Explain the meanings of words in English.
2. Write sentences that show how words are used.
3. Write sentences that illustrate the meanings of words.
4. Use words correctly. (For example: You should know what noun(s)an adjective normally describes, what noun/verb patterns there are for a noun or verb, what preposition(s) a noun/verb normally uses, etc.)
5. Link related words to each other.

Sample questions:

1. Explain the meaning of 'stereotype' in English and write a sentence that illustrates its use.

Sample answer:
Explanation of the word:
A stereotype is a fixed idea about a particular person or thing. Negative stereotypes of minority groups are harmful because they encourage discrimination.

Sentence showing how the word is used:
The stereotype of the Japanese tourist is of someone who travels with many other Japanese, taking many photographs and buying many souvenirs.



2. Fill in the gaps. If no first letter or clue is given, the gap should be filled by a preposition (or left blank if no preposition is needed).
