Akira Hashimoto received his PhD from the University of Tokyo in 1992. He is currently researching the history of psychiatry in Europe and Asia from a comparative point of view, specializing on the Gheel colony and its international interest in the 19th and 20th centuries, and confined patients and their communities under the Mental Patients’ Custody Act (1900-1950) in Japan.
